“Before, I was struggling to put sufficient vegetables on the table for my family. Now, I’m able to grow my own vegetables. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn skills and become more self-sufficient.”
Suku Tamang (she/her), a 35-year-old farmer from Newartole, Sindhupalchowk, was once reliant on the market for vegetables. Her kitchen often lacked even basic vegetables; was difficult to afford vegetables. However, Suku has transformed her farming practices and become more self-sufficient after the Climate Resilience Initiative (CRI) Program. The program has been implemented by Community Self-Reliance Centre (CSRC), supported by World Jewish Relief (WJR).
Through the program, Suku learned essential skills like tunnel farming and the preparation of biofertilizers. With the program’s support, she constructed a greenhouse tunnel and received the necessary materials and equipment. Her dedication and newly acquired knowledge quickly paid off.
Suku successfully cultivated organic tomato in her single greenhouse, earning approximately 10,000 Rupees from her first harvest. This not only met her family’s needs but also allowed her to sell surplus produce. Inspired by her success, Suku expanded her farming efforts by building another tunnel and diversifying her crops with tomato, beans, local chili, and cauliflower.
She reflects, “Before, I was struggling to put sufficient vegetables on the table for my family. Now, I’m able to grow my own vegetables. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn skills and become more self-sufficient.”
